Childhood Memories

Fri Oct 18, 2013, 6:41 AM

Please, please read this in the Journal tab so the deviations display correctly, they look badly collated on my profile page! :iconchibispainplz:

I've been meaning to write this journal for... probably about a year   As I've travelled the paths of dA I've seen things that remind me of my childhood home and have collected them for the beautiful memories and would now like to share them.

I was born in the town (now a large town I believe) of High Wycombe in Bucks (Buckinghamshire) in England in 1956.  When I was 11 we moved to the countryside and I spent 4 idyllic years (when I wasn't at school) wandering the farmland and woods surrounding our family home.  These years were very, very precious to me and I will cherish the English countryside inside my head for the rest of my life.

When I was 15 we got on a cruise ship and sailed away to Australia to live and I have never returned to the UK.  Well, not yet anyway.

Thanks to everyone who has posted pictures that have kept these memories so fresh for me.  Even though quite a few of these deviations were not taken in the UK, they were familiar sights to me when I lived there.

I remember this one - the actual place, not just one like it.

High Wycombe Water Mill by GMCPhotographics
I won't talk about each picture, but mostly they are the sights of nature that I loved so much for my final 4 years in the UK.  I could hear a donkey bray each morning from my bedroom and pick fresh hazelnuts from the tree just a few feet away.  But anyway, if you have any questions about the memories of any specific deviation, just ask.  And now I'll be quiet and share the beauty.

Thank you for the feature - somehow this journal entry means a lot to me,mainly because now the weather is bad and I spend my time revisiting old photos - also the ones taken in Poland where I come from and I realize how much those landscapes are close to my heart;) So I can say I understand you:D However,I'm very happy with the present state of things too and I would like to live in a couple of countries more before I settle down somewhere (which may never happen lol:D) but I definitely know what you mean dear May:D

Oh dear, my mum is the same.  She used to clean houses as part time work.  Got to one of them one day (where a policeman lived) and found a hole in the wall.  When she asked him what happened he said that he was terrified of spiders and had shot one when he saw it on the wall :iconikillitplz:  So funny!

I have never laughed so hard:D Lol!That's what I would do definitely, but since I don't have a gun, I have to gather all my courage and dispose of them with a broom or a vacuum cleaner:D Most often I call someone to do this for me though:D

What a stunning journal/story.  I am in love with UK, too, and the photos remind me of my childhood in Europe. Living here in Oz I miss so many things I found in this journal.  Thank you for including my lilac photo here. I am honoured. The photo was taken in Cotswolds - one of the most magical places in the world  I hope you visit the English countryside soon :)

Thank you so much Gosia I really appreciate your words and I'm thrilled to know that you enjoyed the journal so much :iconpenguinsnuggleplz: I come from not very far away from the Cotswolds.  My family history is based soundly in Oxfordshire on my mother's side, and my husband's father is from Gloucestershire.  I think it is firmly in my blood, and that of my children - who have never set foot in the UK :giggle:

I'm so happy to have stirred some fond memories for you too, and thank you for telling me where your adorable photo was taken :iconloveloveplz:

Yes, I am so in love with your mother country :) When I was younger I wanted to live there, but it was not possible with my Polish citizenship. Now I could - but firstly I am too old to re-root again, and secondly I like Australia, too. I still miss Europe a lot, the scenery, the plants, the buildings, the "everything" and your journal moved me there for a while :) Well done

Yes, Australia is great, but I still love England, and my Poland, of course.
